Though I went to NYU to study mathematics and engineering, I always had an interest in filmmaking. My problem was I didn’t know exactly where I fit in.
After graduating, I worked as a project manager for a few years, and during that time, my partner taught me all about the film industry. It was just as the pandemic started that I realized what I wanted to do, Assistant Direct.
The skillset I honed as a project manager would help me fight right in as an assistant director; scheduling, coordination, personality management, and safety. I took my time during lock-down to read up on how to be an effective AD. When productions were starting back up, I got my COVID Compliance Certification in order to get onto more sets. I leveraged my willingness to work and pulled double-duty as both an AD and CCO.
Since making the shift to the entertainment industry full-time, I have had the opportunity to work on a number of short films, a web-series, a couple of feature films, and a handful of television shows. I still have work to do until I can work as a union assistant director, but I’m sure that AD’ing is where I fit best.
